SUMMAH!!!

summaaaah!!! here in washington, summer was a little late in coming. usually after summer solstice the sun comes out to stay, but this year the clouds and chill stayed until the 4th of July. But since then... the sun has been out - sunny, 75-85 F, cool breeze... perfecto!

this month, i have been free from work and schedule, free from any constraints except those that I impose on myself. the weather has been fabulous, the company great, and... yeah...

i like.

i been hanging out at the beach, at the campfire, in the garden. reconnecting with folks i'd lost touch with. pondering things to come. waiting. hoping. doubting. too much of the latter two.

shucks. in all honesty, i'm afraid i've been wasting my time. it's nice to not have a schedule, but i've been doing a lot of nothing worthwhile. i've got to wake myself up from this complacent slumber, but it's slow in happening. i've been thinking lately about listening. about prayer. i'm reading a book called "Whole Prayer" by Walt Wangerin, which is helping me understanding that prayer requires not just speaking, but listening and waiting expectantly. it requires believing that a) God is real, b) God is present, c) God is personal, and d) that he does speak. Simple beliefs that are easier spoken than believed. And even less easier put into practice, daily, intentionally.

also on listening, i know that listening to those around me is hard to do when my mouth is running.

things my brain is munching on and my heart digesting:

Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him. (psalm 37:7)
Be still, and know that I [Yahweh] am God. (psalm 46:10)
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin... Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God. (Ecclesiastes 5:1-7)
